Layout suggestions
« on: May 28, 2007, 06:21:20 AM »
I had already started cutting up this design when I realized I had way to less space for content, so I changed a good deal of it. I could use some feedback though, any feedback whatsoever is appreciated.

It's not much more than a redo of a mockup design I have previously posted.

What do you think: too much imagery, or looking ok?

Last one looks nice, but i feel that its a little empty in the white space around the
"dummy text of printing and", but i am usless as a designer :p

it looks pretty good. personally i'm not much a fan of the diagonal background pattern but not just in this case, just in general. I guess my worry with a layout with so much imagery is always how well it handles lots of content - ie, in terms of stretching part of the layout and leaving huge amounts of whitespace elsewhere.

i'd also do one of two things with the text - either up the size a notch, or add some line height just to let it breath a bit more. It looks a bit too squashed together.

Otherwise, it's a good job!

The middle section will stretch to some extent. What I'll do is make the background too high. Then the layer that uses it (the left and right boxes) can stretch until we run out of background. But then, as you point out, there's still a problem when you stretch one side more then the other. Guess I'll just have to ensure that doesn't happen. Or in some other cases, I could simply add a third container on the side that is lacking content. I'll figure it out.

I agree, it needs a little more space.

I think I like this a lot better: more space, more consistency, and generally simpler.

looks familiar ;)

I don't like all those different drop shadows.  The background in the last one makes everything look too busy. The bottom section doesn't align to the left. The snake looking cat5 looks pretty strange.

Are you just doing this out of boredom?

I know. It does say so in the OP.  ;)

I don't like all those different drop shadows.

I know, the bottom box shadow's a bit off. I'll be sure to match the numbers before slicing though.

The background in the last one makes everything look too busy.

Yeah, you're probably right about that one. I might try to have it fade a little quicker. Or might just drop it. But then it gets a little boring. I'll try fading first, we'll see.

The bottom section doesn't align to the left.

That was done intentionally (it matches the innerbox of the middle and top conatiner), but I've extended it to the left since I last edited. I agree that it looks better that way.

The snake looking cat5 looks pretty strange.

You think? I kinda like it... I especially like how it seems to stick out.

Are you just doing this out of boredom?

No.

I'm open to any suggestions. I am especially having difficulties with the middle section. I can't seem to make it work with the rest of the page.

I need a new videocard. I am now at work and I didn't notice before that some the text is green instead of black.  :-[

Ya - the headings are dark green, but I think it looks well.

I too notice a big difference between video cards. Some will show up light colours, other cards will make them very dark in colour.

Its a nice design, I like it a lot.

Well, my videocard has taken quite the beating, I've been surprised that it even continued to work.

I have a watercooled system, and the connections on my copper block on my northbridge (above my video card) kept leaking. You can actually see marks from dried up puddles of water on it.  :P

The titles are intended green though. It's the content text in the second item on the left I'm talking about.

How about if I lose the tail?
