I don't know if the black background goes well with the rest of that page. Also, your logo looks choppy in the picture.

any suggestions for different background colour? maybe go white and use borders for the text areas? Opinions?

I don't like it. The black doesn't go well with the rest of the website. The logo looks fine to me.
