Connecting To Progress OpenEdge 4GL Database

When the crappy microsoft share-point portal starts to be major issues I'm beginning to beg for an alternative....

With regards to What I've been heard knocked around that the main database is a Progress said OpenEdge 4gl or something like that database... and given a story on how it was more reliable then Mysql... which maybe I am wrong but I believe that to be outright propaganda from progress. Anyways... does anyone here know anything about that database system and what I need to get PHP to talk to it?
