i agree, its far too bright in comparison to the rest of the webpage

White & Black don't work. The text is unclear in grey and the header image is hardly visible.

Maybe it is my perception of colour:  I quite like it and can see everything clearly.  But take note that if somethings are difficult to see by some of the others, this could be a monitor issue where some monitors display things clearer than others... which you will (of course) need to compensate for... unless you are targeting an audience who has brighter monitors hehehe.

I don't love the color scheme ... it's a little too contrasty from me. The layout of the items looks pretty good though, so i think i you adjusted your colors it would come together better.

If you changed the white to off white: fffef2 or something similar, I think it would be better. fffef2 is a slight tint of yellow/orange. perhaps you could go with something that is a slight tint of another color? It's worth a try, since that is the main complaint here.
