Have you been helped here?

Edit 2008-05-27: Donation link: http://www.phpfreaks.com/page/donations

[Important] Edit 2008-10-9:
With the upgrade to SMF 2 we've got a new nifty feature: paid subscriptions. For $10/month or $100/year $80/year (two four months free!) you can get in a special donator group with stars and a different color for your name. We also plan on putting ads on the site eventually and those Also, all the advertisements will be hidden for the people in the donator group.

You can purchase it here: http://www.phpfreaks.com/forums/index.php?action=profile;sa=subscriptions

You can also still donate via the link above, but those will be anonymous and you'll thus not be put in the donator group. You can choose to hide your donator status if you do not want it to be publicly shown as well.

I've been visiting phpfreaks on a regular basis for something like 2 Years now.   This is a great community which I know has helped thousands of people learn PHP and Mysql and accomplish some of the things they wanted to do.

Recently Eric posted a plea for donations.  This site gets 200k page views EVERY DAY.  Although "uniques" in the world of the web are hard to determine accurately, 70k individual visitors come to the site every day.  And yet... phpfreaks has received but a handful of donations.  THIS IS UNACCEPTABLE!!!

You can imagine what it costs for the hardware and bandwidth to keep this community going.  If you know anything about the state of web advertising, especially in the opensource world, you know that the advertisiing included on this site provides a small trickle of income, and nothing more.

You can also imagine what would happen if tommorrow we all arrived to find phpfreaks.com with all its resources, tutorials and these great forums... GONE.

I have posted thousands of posts on these forums, most of them helping others.  I don't regret this one bit, but my time and expertise are donated to the community, and I am not alone.  I help people here, and in IRC at very least a few times a week.  There are moderators and regulars who have also posted thousands of messages, and I know that they help people every single day.

If you have ever been helped here by me, or any other moderator, I'm asking you to simply take 5 minutes of your time and Donate a few dollars to PHPFreaks to offset their costs and keep this site going.

To get things going I'm offering a matching offer.

I will donate $30 dollars, once six people donate $5 or more.  Simply clip your paypal confirmation email and add it as a reply to this post.  Furthermore, if your donation is $10 or more, and you want a Gmail invite, simply indicate this in your confirmation reply.  Once there are 5 confirmed donations, I'll immediately send my $30 donation, and provide confirmation of that fact here.

Verified Donation #1 thePip3r

Verified Donation #4 evexa
Verified Donation #5 Shaggycap
Verified Donation #6 After-Death

Let's see how fast we can get this done people.
------------------------------------------------------------------
*UPDATE*

It took a while but we hit the magic number.  Thanks to all who played along, and here's my matching confirmation.

Payment Details

Transaction ID:  8K5017479P653594L

Total:  $30.00 USD

Item/Product Name:  PHP Freaks Donations

Item/Product Number:  TWFPHPFreaks

Buyer:  David Rolston

---------------------------------------------------------------------

I'm going to extend my matching offer, but this time I have a larger goal in mind:  $200 in total donations!  When I match, I'm going to use my donation and redeem sponsorship on behalf of one of the sites I volunteer my time to.  I'm not sure yet which one that will be, and I suspect it might take a while, but I'm sure that the phpfreaks community has the ability to make this happen, so you'll not only be benefitting phpfreaks, but also helping a worthwhile site at the same time (more on this later).

It doesn't matter if you can donate $2, or $10 or  $25... all that matters is that you donate what you can afford to keep this community alive and to motivate Eric and Co. to continue to spend the time and money it takes to keep this place running.

----------------------------------------------------------------------

Well i only had $4 in my paypal account, and i could think of no better place to send it, as it came from script sales that were developed with the help of this site and forum. No doubt i will donate more in the coming weeks, but i only had $4 in my account :)

Of course it will always help to click adverts on the site that interest you too.

i've sent $5.00 for now giz... more to come later :)

i would also like to say to the community that if you feel overwhelmed by the concept of donations because you can't give 5, 10, or 15+ dollars, realize that you can send in a quarter (as long as paypal does not have a minimum amount--i'm not aware?). at the time of this posting, if 10% of the community donated a quarter, that would be nearly $400.

I'm glad phpfreaks.com decided to ask their members to donate. It's only fair we give back to the place that made us what we are as coders today :)
This is, in my opinion, the most deserved coding forum I know...I'm sure most of us would be happy that you are accepting our humble donations...but, if you don't mind me asking, approximately how much would you guys need to keep this place running for lets say another year?
Let me know, and I will send what I can over paypal :)

A long time ago, when I was just starting out I pirated everything I could get my hands on. Once I started making money I bought those tools that enabled me to earn. What's right is right.

I feel the same way about PHP Freaks, except that I didn't have to pirate. They gave it to me.

 hi gizmola,

i read your note on donation to phpfreaks, whilst i can understand this site help a lot of people, i must be unlucky, as i am trying in vain to have some help, regarding the tutorial on creating membership system, i've gone through all the forum, what i've come accross is that newbie is helping newbie, half of the reply i get don't make sense to me, the files i downloaded after the tutorial, half of it is blank with no scripts or code in them,  i cannot even follow the tutorial or finish it, what are we donating for, i've seen several people asking for help yet again and again. if we are to donate our hard earned cash, at least let us have some satisfaction, don't leave us newbie to fight this battle alone. if phpfreaks only received a hanful of donation, please ask why, at least i've given my answer. perhaps if we get  more help real help, i for one would be happy to donate.

regards

coco

Well, I'm a newbie too, and I've posted requests for help well over a dozen times
and got good answers on all but one or two occasions, often by people who appeared to be experts.  I even think I helped someone else out once.

But I don't have a paypal account, and I don't need or necessarily want a Paypal account, so is there a snail mail address I can send a check to?

I assume we're all webmasters of some website. What's the one thing we need to make money? Hits! How do we make money from those hits? Banners! Most banners need to be clicked on to make money, while others get a few bucks per thousand people. I assume we all know this.

My point is, for those of you who cannot donate, give those banners a click. It takes at most a second out of your day, but it makes phpfreaks probably $.05 to $.10, or even more a click. If you click a banner everytime you visit the site or the forums, this will add up substantially for PHP freaks. Let's all click the banners for the good of the freaks! (I just clicked a rapidVPS banner)
