While I'm normally against the standard piece of PHP literature. this new book seems like a must-read for the advanced crowd.

ok i read it *ober*. I read it before i made the thread. but since it was closed, i suppose I'll just ask again here as I didn't see an answer.

What is a good book for me to read to learn more about advanced PHP topics? Topics not covered in MOST php books like IMAP functions and such.

Hello Guys -
My First Post To PHPFreaks!

I was reading this thread and find it very useful for anybody whose going to start learning PHP.

I am a Flash and 3d related guy - But I am really very interested in learning PHP and using that in making dynamic sites and many type of online works.

I have not even a single idea about the language just read some first lessons of w3schools and I am ready to start learning PHP.

Where should I start and what should I do - many more questions in my mind and I hope you can understand that newbie's ques and answer me in detail.

Thanks Again,
Addies.

How about PHP-GTK books?  The only one that turns up on Amazon/Borders is written in Portugese...  there must be some more out there somewhere!  I've had a hard time even finding many (good) tutorials on the web, other than your standard "Hello, World!"

Scott Mattocks has written a great book on PHP-GTK: Pro PHP-GTK. It's in English.

If you are loooking for tutorials and sample codes on PHP-GTK, here are two:

I know my word really doesn't mean much around here, being a noobie and all but I really found this list a helpful resource and immediately proceeded to purchase every book mentioned off of Amazon. I needed something to do with a several hundred dollar gift card there anyway.  :-\

You probably purchased ((total books) - 1) books too many. One book is all you need, and the manual will take over from there.

I have the Peachpit/Larry Ullman book, so I'm curious to know what the OP meant by 'old syntax' and if anyone can provide me with examples of what the (apparent) new standard is now.

Thanks :)
Don't go to w3schools.  Here's why
Every time a PHP coder uses 'global' a kitten dies.

Advanced PHP Programming

A must read for a true PHP programmer. It goes over design patterns, core PHP 5 techniques, and much much more. I thought I had nothing more to learn about PHP, then I read this book, definently proved me wrong. It runs about $49.99 on shelves, $32.99 on Amazon. A+ on this book :)
