How to run query for 'not less than'.

Here is my query:

$query = "SELECT * FROM zumba_timetable WHERE day='$today_day' AND end_time!<'$current_time' ORDER BY end_time ASC LIMIT 0,1";

Essentially, I am checking an event timetable to find the next event today, where the end time is not before the current time. The variables are already set in the code, but the script returns this:

You have an error in your SQL syntax; check the manual that corresponds to your MySQL server version for the right syntax to use near '!<='19:01' ORDER BY end_time ASC LIMIT 0,1' at line 1

I have swapped the ! and < around and even added an = but to no avail.

Any clues?
