Create a button that will issue SQL update, but not refresh page

Hi. I have a div tag that I have loaded with fields from a SQL database. I have loaded the div using AJAX.

 

I have an update button at the bottom of the form within the div tag. I want users to be able to click the update button and the SQL statement is issued in the background and the user gets a message back saying the update was successful without issuing a page refresh.

 

Please help.
