inner join only includes records that match both tables

I want to display all the records of table 1.  I want to inner join with table 2 so that IF there is a match between tables, table 2 data gets displayed. 

 

HOWEVER, if there is no match in table 2, then the corresponding record in table 1 does not even get displayed. 

 

$query = "select * from table1
inner join table2 on table1.id = table2.table1_id 

 

How do I display all the records of table 2, and if that id does not match with anything on table 2, STILL display that record?
