Saving Images Created On-The-Fly

How can I save an image created on-the-fly on the server?  For example,

$img = "<img src=ChessImager/ChessImager.php?ds_color=(176,144,112)&ls_color=(224,200,160)&coordinates=on&square_size=$square_size&fen=" . urlencode($fen) . ">";

I can display the diagram, but I want to save these images with PHP.

You'd save using something that depends on how you're creating the images. GD has a few image*() functions while ImageMagick has a writeImage() function.

But I'm not sure you want to do that. How much can the colors change? Could they be anything? That would mean 281 trillion possible images you'd be saving, and that doesn't include the varying square_size...
